The downside to our premium choice is that it is expensive, and while we thought it worked quite well, it’s strictly point-and-shoot. There’s no automatic control, so it’s not something you can leave in your yard to cut down on barking throughout the day.

Dogs that far away only wear down the battery, which already has a short life.

The downside of this brand is that it didn’t seem to put out a loud enough signal to affect our dogs barking. We tried all of the range settings, and there was no change. When we placed it in our home away from wind and traffic, the higher range settings did produce some results.

We were surprised by how tiny this device is as it’s only slightly larger than a 9-volt battery. The problem with it being so small is that it’s easy to lose unless you mount it permanently. We also noticed that the on/off switch on this device was flimsy when we accidentally broke ours off.

While we used this device, we didn’t have a lot of faith in the infrared part, but the ultrasonic part is potent. When operating this device as an ultrasonic bark control device, it’s easy to forget that its real purpose is as a security device. The ultrasound emitted can be too harsh for some pets and may even damage their hearing if used carelessly. The other downside to this device is that there is no stand-alone mode. The absent automatic mode means there is no way to control barking while you sleep or are away.

While we used it, we felt that the ultrasonic signal wasn’t powerful enough to prevent, or even deter, our dogs from barking. The LED lamp is excellent for late-night walks with our pets, but it loses its charge quickly.

The Tenlso Ultrasonic Dog Bark Controller is the last ultrasonic bark controller on our list. This model features four sensitivity settings to dial in the perfect amount of bark deterrent. It also features a handy wall mount for permanently installing it out of the way. It also plugs directly into the wall, so you never need to worry about replacing batteries or charging.

Unfortunately, this model is only water-resistant, so you cannot expose it to rain or dew, which limits its outside usefulness. We also didn’t like the design of this model. It doesn’t mount flush against the wall; instead, you install a mounting plate to the wall and attach the device to that. This system allows you to remove the device from the plate once installed, but the only reason to remove it is to adjust the sensitivity. When the bark controller is attached to the wall plate, it juts out and is extremely fragile. Any accidental bump will break the mount. We would have liked this model a lot more if they brought the sensitivity setting to the front so it can mount firmly to the wall. It’s also challenging to adjust the sensitivity settings, and it requires a screwdriver.
