5 Best Indestructible Dog Crate Pads in 2022 – Reviews & Top Picks

Dog Crate Bed

Getting your dog to use his crate can be a challenge, but it’s well worth it in the end. One of the best ways to convince him to start spending more time in there is by dressing it up with a comfy pad.

Of course, you may have thought of that already — and you may have spent twenty minutes cleaning up the destroyed carcass of the pad you bought him, too. If that’s the case, consider investing in an indestructible model.

Now, we should note that there’s no such thing as a truly “indestructible” crate pad, but some of the options on this list come close. Others don’t quite live up to the hype. How can you tell the difference? We’ll tell you everything you need to know in the reviews below.

  • The 5 Best Indestructible Dog Crate Pads:

    1. Big Barker Orthopedic Dog Crate Pad – Best Overall

Big Barker Orthopedic Dog Crate Pad-100px

The Big Barker uses two different types of foam to cushion your dog’s joints and limbs. The bottom level is firm, with little give, so that the metal of the crate won’t be able to penetrate through to bother your pup. The upper level is much more cushy and conforms to the shape of your dog’s body to reduce tension.

The fabric is extremely durable as well, so it should be able to handle nearly anything your mutt throws at it. Notice we said “nearly,” as it’s not fully chew-proof, so you’ll need to keep your dog from munching on it if possible. Even if you can’t, though, it should last quite a while.

It’s also waterproof, so if your pooch has an accident all you have to do is sop it up. You can then remove the cover and throw it in the washing machine if you like.

The most annoying thing about it is that the measurements are a little off, so you may need to order a size larger than you think you’ll need. Either that or figure out a way to pad the difference inside the crate.

Overall, though, the Big Barker should provide years of comfortable service for your dog, which is why it earns the top spot on this list.

    Pros
    • Uses two different kinds of foam
    • Completely waterproof
    • Machine washable
    • Fabric is extremely durable
    Cons
    • Measurements aren’t completely accurate

    2. Pet Dreams Dog Crate Bed – Best Value

Pet Dreams 32503 Dog Crate Bed

This option from Pet Dreams is basically a giant pillow you throw inside the crate, so don’t expect it to fit perfectly inside. However, it provides a tremendous amount of comfort at a low price, which is why it’s our pick for best indestructible dog crate pad for the money.

There are two sides to it, one that’s cotton and the other that’s made from a Sherpa material. This makes it great for just about any weather, as the cotton side will keep your dog cool while the Sherpa material will trap body heat in the winter.

This pillow can be used anywhere, not just a crate, so feel free to toss it on the floor or set it up next to you on the couch. You can even pick between three colors to find one to match your existing decor.

Unfortunately, it’s not terribly thick, so if you have an arthritic dog you might want to set another mat underneath it. Also, it’s a magnet for dog hair, so expect to wash yours regularly.

Given the price, though, neither of those issues are enough to keep us from recommending the Pet Dreams — but they are enough to keep it out of the top spot.

    Pros
    • Budget-friendly model
    • Sides are reversible
    • Good for all-weather use
    • Works well outside of crates too
    Cons
    • Very thin
    • Traps a lot of dog hair

    3. K9 Ballistics Orthopedic Crate Pad – Premium Choice

    K9 Ballistics Orthopedic Crate Pad-100px

With a name like “K9 Ballistics,” you might think this pad could stop a bullet — and we can’t say for certain it won’t.

That doesn’t mean that it’s not comfortable, though. Far from it, in fact. The ripstop ballistic cover encases two inches of thick foam, but it’s extremely forgiving on old joints.

Even better, it provides that support without allowing your dog to sink in, so he shouldn’t have any issue getting up after laying down. This makes it an excellent choice for senior animals.

It’s made to stand up to heavy chewers, and it even has zip ties that let you attach it to the crate to prevent Fido from dragging it out and shaking it. That also keeps it from sliding around as he tries to get comfortable.

So why is the K9 Ballistics not ranked higher? It’s quite expensive for one thing, and the cover has a coating that peels off over time. It doesn’t seem to be anything more than a cosmetic flaw, but it’s disappointing in a product at this price, nonetheless.

We would still heartily recommend this bed, but you should probably try one of the two ranked above it first.

    Pros
    • Made with thick foam
    • Dogs won’t sink into it
    • Comes with zip ties for attaching it to the crate
    • Good for senior dogs
    Cons
    • Very expensive
    • Coating flakes over time

    4. goDog Bed Bubble Bolster

    goDog BBOL201 Bed Bubble Bolster

The goDog Bed Bubble Bolster doesn’t look like much, as it’s a thin pad with a thick ring of cushioning around it. However, that ring is made with their Chew Guard technology, which should help it survive if your pooch decides it looks tasty for some reason.

The anti-skid bottom keeps it in place, even if your dog likes to fidget, and the plush coverings help make it soft enough that he won’t want to move. It’s perfect for tossing on the floor, too, so you don’t have to limit its use to the crate.

While it’s soft, it doesn’t offer as much support as some of the other beds on this list, so it’s not the best option for older pups. Also, putting the Chew Guard inside the ring only seems to invite dogs to try their luck with it.

It comes in a variety of colors, but they all seem to be different shades of brown. Also, if you’re particularly fond of the brown shade you get, be careful when you wash it, as the color fades quickly.

The goDog Bed Bubble Bolster is a fine mat, but there’s nothing about it that really sets it apart, so the highest we can rank it is #4 on this list.

    Pros
    • Outer ring made with Chew Guard technology
    • Anti-skid bottom
    • Soft plush covering
    Cons
    • Offers little support
    • Only available in boring brown shades
    • Color fades if you wash it

    5. K&H Pet Ruff n’ Tuff Crate Pad

K&H Pet 8932 Ruff n' Tuff Crate Pad

The K&H Ruff n’ Tuff looks naked, like they forgot to sew the fabric covering onto it. Instead, what you get is a basic polyester exterior. It’s nothing special, and you may have to dress it up a bit to convince your dog to use it.

It’s not very soft, either. It’s like the manufacturer was so concerned with making it indestructible that they forgot to make it comfortable. So, in addition to adding a cover, you might need to dress it up with another pad or some pillows, too.

The corners aren’t sewn together, so you have two loose ends at each corner. These seem to invite your dog to attack it, which is annoying even if he can’t do much damage.

Fortunately, it’s not very expensive, but you don’t get much value for your money, either. As a result, it’s hard for us to be too enthusiastic about it, and so last place seems about right.

    Pros
    • Fairly inexpensive
    Cons
    • Exterior isn’t very soft
    • Not much padding
    • Corners invite chewing and biting
    • May struggle to convince dog to use it

    Conclusion

We’re big fans of the Big Barker, as it uses two different kinds of foam to keep your dog comfortable. On top of that, it’s completely waterproof, so you don’t have to worry about accidents.

In second place was the Pet Dreams pillow, a two-sided model that will keep your dog snug and comfy all year long. It’s budget-friendly as well, so even if your pup figures out a way to destroy it you won’t be out much.

Buying a bed of any kind for your dog can be supremely frustrating, as they’re often expensive — and they rarely last long. Hopefully, our reviews have made it easier for you to find one that can survive your pooch’s most destructive tendencies while also providing him a soft spot on which to catch some z’s.

Failing that, of course, you could always just let him sleep in your bed — and that’s probably been his secret plan all along…
