What are the types of pet food recalls?

There are two major types of pet food recalls: voluntary recalls, which are issued by the company, and ordered recalls, which come directly from the FDA. Most recalls are voluntary — your pet food company doesn’t want to sell you contaminated food — but some are enforced by the government.

The FDA can either request or order a dog food recall, depending on the severity of the problem. You’ll want to pay particular attention to ordered recalls, which are used on products with the biggest problems.

Once the product has been recalled, the FDA will issue an alert and the company will work on fixing the problem. The FDA will make sure the dog food is safe before allowing it back on the market.
